What Are ELSTER Certificates?

ELSTER Certificates are a digital identity document – similar to your ID card. It allows you to securely sign in to Mein ELSTER, the German tax administration's online portal. For many official procedures, it replaces a handwritten signature and verifies that you are the legitimate account holder. The most common format is a password-protected .pfx file.

Before you can use your certificate, you must request it during the registration process for Mein ELSTER using either your personal tax identification number (for individuals) or your tax number (for businesses).
